leukotrienes and proteases, and inhibits blood vessel
dilating substances such as seratonin and histamine. |
| Indications |
Migraine, headache, allergy,
dysmenorrhea, rhematoid arthritis. |
| Contraindications |
Pregnancy (may stimulate
menstruation). Children under age 2. |
| Side
effects |
Mild gastrointestinal symptoms,
nervousness and (rarely) tachycardia. Chronic use may
be associated with rebound migraine symptoms, anxiety,
poor sleep and possibly joint stiffness. |
| Drug
interations |
Inhibits pletelet aggregation
and may increase bleeding - use with caution in patients
taking anticoagulants. NSAIDS may reduce effectiveness
of feverfew. |
| Therapeutic
dose |
1-2 grams of the dried leaves
may be needed during an acute migraine attack. Less
than 100 mg per day.may be useful in preventing a migraine. |
