Feverfew

Tanecetum Parthenium
Therapeutic effect
Inhibits pro-inflamatory leukotrienes and proteases, and inhibits blood vessel dilating substances such as seratonin and histamine.
Indications
Migraine, headache, allergy, dysmenorrhea, rhematoid arthritis.
Contraindications
Pregnancy (may stimulate menstruation). Children under age 2.
Side effects
Mild gastrointestinal symptoms, nervousness and (rarely) tachycardia. Chronic use may be associated with rebound migraine symptoms, anxiety, poor sleep and possibly joint stiffness.
Drug interations
Inhibits pletelet aggregation and may increase bleeding - use with caution in patients taking anticoagulants. NSAIDS may reduce effectiveness of feverfew.
Therapeutic dose
1-2 grams of the dried leaves may be needed during an acute migraine attack. Less than 100 mg per day.may be useful in preventing a migraine.
